THE 100TH MT OF COAL TRANSSHIPPED BY OTEKO' BULK CARGO TERMINAL AT THE PORT OF TAMAN

Since 2019, 100 mln tons of coal have been transshipped at OTEKO’s specialized transshipment complex. This quantity would suffice to provide Sweden, Norway or the UAE with electric power for 1.5 years.

Over this period of operation, OTEKO’s bulk cargo terminal opened convenient ways to the world’s top markets including countries of Global South for producers and exporters. The leaders among recipient countries where the most coal is shipped to, are Turkey, India and China, some of Russia’s major trade partners.

The first 20 kt of coal were loaded by OTEKO’s bulk cargo terminal to Pirin bulk carrier on March 7, 2019. Dozens of exporters from Russia’s various and near-abroad countries have become the company’s customers ever since.

The Taman Complex is the only terminal at the Black Sea Coast of Russia capable of accepting and loading Capesize large bulk carriers with deadweight up to 220 kt to the maximum draft. They can cross the Bosporus Strait on a regular basis. The terminal is fit accordingly for simultaneous loading of 4 such ships which is of prime importance for supply of power generating coal.

The modern infrastructure of OTEKO ensures environmentally-friendly and fully automated transshipment of coal of various types. The company’s own railway network, which is integrated with the main railway lines of RZD and the hump yard, enables simultaneous split of two railway trains. Two tipplers are used for the coal discharge: they can grab three semi-railcars at a time and discharge up to 200 kt of coal per day.

The terminal’s coal stockyards may hold up to 3.5 mln tons at a time. Seven stacker-reclaimers, each a seven-storied building high, have an overall capacity of 42 kt per hour. Their bucket wheel has an impressive diameter of 10.6 m and the length of each mechanism is comparable with a football field.

“Russian coal of due quality is in demand abroad: analysts forecast an increase in demand of 38% by 2030, with the outstanding interest from countries of South and South Eastern Asia. Today we are celebrating the transshipment of 100 mln tons of coal, being not a limit and frankly speaking not even our design capacity. We can’t help but consider specific factors, in particular market conditions and carrying capacity limitations of the railways. At the same time, we are confident that it is necessary and important to increase coal exports through the southern ports, as they are the most convenient and ready for increased transshipment,” emphasizes Alexander Gaganov, Commercial Director for Bulk Cargo Business Development of OTEKO. “The infrastructure of OTEKO fully meets the requirements of both coal exporters and consumers. Due to the favorable geographic position of the port of Taman, ice free waters and high performance of the terminal’s equipment all parties of the trading process may be confident in forecastability of the delivery terms and high quality of the feedstock handling.”

Special care is given by OTEKO to processability of own transshipment infrastructure: employees use remote systems to control most equipment; artificial intelligence technologies and a predictive analytics system are extensively used.

One more priority of OTEKO is environmental safety: this is a closed coal transshipment with tipplers, a closed conveyor system and dust suppression technologies in place — at the stockyard, 216 spraying guns are in operation on a daily basis and 25-m high shields provide protection against dust and wind along the entire perimeter.
