Collect separately: OTEKO summarized the first results of the system of separate waste collection

Over 11 months of 2022 OTEKO reduced the total mass of solid municipal waste (MSW) by 130.2 tons compared to the same period of 2021. This is the first result of implementing a system for separate collection of production and consumption waste at the company’s enterprises. The use of special containers in the production and household premises of the port of Taman will make it possible to recycle and thereby provide a second life to useful MSW: metal, plastic, cardboard and paper.

In the near future, the company plans to purchase another 250 containers, including used battery containers. Implementation of the separate waste collection system has already enabled the company to reduce the volume of MSW transferred for disposal.

“Separate waste collection is on a par with the set of measures that the company is already applying to protect the environment. Over 1 billion rubles has been spent on the dust suppression systems infrastructure over several years. Solid waste management is also noteworthy. In addition to the obvious positive environmental effect on the entire region, separate collection will make it possible to reduce own costs for waste disposal and storage, and to partially recycle it in production,” says Alexander Pivikov, OTEKO’s Director for Industrial Safety.

OTEKO sees another positive effect from the introduction of the separate waste collection system as environmental education for personnel, the development of both production culture and caring for the environment. Now the company’s staff, in addition to participating in environmental projects to clean up the Black Sea coast and plant trees in villages and settlements, will be able to minimize their own negative environmental footprint. Everyone can learn which container is more appropriate and relevant for certain types of waste, the schedule and the specialized contractor in charge of transporting waste from the enterprise facilities for storage, decontamination and processing — from the Memo and the approved “Procedure of Waste Management”.
